May 26th-June 2nd, 2006. Awesome alaskan cruise!! I went with my sister Emily and her in-laws (because Emily's husband, Jeff, is serving our country in Iraq. Thank you, Jeff! and thank you, Jeff!) And thank you to Jeff's wonderful family who took me in and made me feel completely welcome!

AND WE'RE OFF!! ...looking back at seattle after leaving the port on friday evening.
decknight-PD.jpg (Viewed 73 times)  (0 comments)
out on deck at night. after 2 caribbean cruises, it is really strange to see snowy mountains instead of palm tree beaches as the ship's backdrop.
dockedjuneau-PD.jpg (Viewed 74 times)  (0 comments)
our first stop is Juneau, AK. the only way in or out of juneau is by boat or plane....interesting place for a capitol city.
mollyontram-PD .jpg (Viewed 71 times)  (0 comments)
this is cute molly. she's 12. she's emily and jeff's niece. we're on the tram up to the top of mount roberts above juneau.

from the trail on mount roberts looking across gold creek valley.....there are at least a half dozen waterfalls coming down over there! ....and every mountain up there!!
emilyhiking-PD.jpg (Viewed 68 times)  (0 comments)
emily and i hiked some trails around the top of mount roberts. it was cold up there! not really as much snow as i expected though.
eandehiking-PD.jpg (Viewed 66 times)  (0 comments)

emkissingtree-PD.jpg (Viewed 67 times)  (0 comments)

waterfall-PD.jpg (Viewed 69 times)  (0 comments)
i don't know how many pictures i took of this particular waterfall and i just couldn't capture it.
trailtunnel-PD.jpg (Viewed 65 times)  (0 comments)
the trails are surrounded by incredible greenery! it's beautiful! this trail is on the way to mendenhall glacier.
mendenhalllake-PD.jpg (Viewed 63 times)  (0 comments)
this is also along the trail to mendenhall glacier. this is the lake at the base of it.
mendenhallglacier-PD.jpg (Viewed 59 times)  (0 comments)
and there is the edge of mendenhall glacier....these photos just don't do the place justice.
emilymendenhall-PD.jpg (Viewed 54 times)  (0 comments)

and there's me sitting by the lake. is it just me, or does my hair look like some sort of fake attachment?
mendenhall-PD.jpg (Viewed 68 times)  (1 comment)
as we were leaving, a big chunk of ice fell off the glacier---you can see the big blue hole where the chunk fell out.
mendenhallglacier2-PD.jpg (Viewed 62 times)  (0 comments)
a little bit closer look at the big blue hole where the chunk fell out.
eaglepost-PD.jpg (Viewed 67 times)  (0 comments)
there were several eagles sitting on top of the lampposts just outside of juneau. this was the best photo i got and you still have to look for it.
juneaustairway-PD.jpg (Viewed 60 times)  (0 comments)
there is a street lined with shops in juneau. the mountain goes almost straight up behind them, and people live up there. this is a stairway up between some shops to the homes above them. i sure am glad i don't have to climb those every day!

nighttime in juneau... there's another big cruise ship that was also docked there-- i guess that gives you a size reference for how big the mountains are.
gnarlytrees-PD.jpg (Viewed 62 times)  (1 comment)
crazy-cool trees on top of mount roberts! (yes, i know i got this one out of order.)
dockedskagway-PD.jpg (Viewed 65 times)  (0 comments)
our second stop was skagway, alaska. here's our cruise ship at the dock with the big snow-topped mountains in the background.
waitingforthetrain-PD.jpg (Viewed 62 times)  (0 comments)
we scheduled a train ride up into the mountains above skagway. here we are waiting at the train station. emily & molly on the left. vickie in the right foreground, tami & nate in the back.
emilyontrain3-PD.jpg (Viewed 61 times)  (0 comments)
emily on a train that is no longer in use....now just a tourist attraction. pretty neat looking, eh?
insidethetrain-PD.jpg (Viewed 56 times)  (0 comments)
this is inside our train car. there's molly right in front of me. they still use the really old train cars. pretty neat looking. you can see the old wood stove at the front of the train---glad we didn't need to use it.
trainpeak-PD.jpg (Viewed 70 times)  (0 comments)
and here is the outside of the train with a beautiful background. each car has a little balcony at the front and back. this was taken from outside on the balcony.

inthetunnel2-PD.jpg (Viewed 52 times)  (0 comments)
i see a light at the end of the tunnel!
whitepass-PD.jpg (Viewed 56 times)  (0 comments)
we've reached white pass. 20.4 miles from skagway. elevation 2888 ft. it doesn't sound very high, but considering we started at sea level, that's a bit of a climb.
borderflags-PD.jpg (Viewed 57 times)  (0 comments)
this post marks the border we crossed over from alaska into british columbia canada.
borderflags2-PD.jpg (Viewed 58 times)  (0 comments)
USA and alaska flags on the left and british columbia and canada flags on the right. sorry, i'm not sure exactly what flag that is in the middls.
deeplake-PD.jpg (Viewed 53 times)  (0 comments)
this looks like a puddle beside the train tracks but it's actually a skinny lake that is 150 feet deep and 4 miles long!

sealions-PD.jpg (Viewed 54 times)  (0 comments)
as we were cruising through a channel, the captain came over the intercom to announce that there were a ton of sealions off to one side just hanging out on the rocks. this was about 9:45 - 10:00 at night---still light enough to see them!
sealions2-PD.jpg (Viewed 54 times)  (0 comments)
the captain was nice enough to take the time to pull the ship close to the side of the channel and stop for 20 minutes so all the passengers could get a good look at the mass of sealions. those are some noisy creatures!
sunset1-PD.jpg (Viewed 55 times)  (0 comments)
we hung out on the deck for a while to enjoy the scenery as the sun was going down.

sunsetpeakscrop-PD.jpg (Viewed 46 times)  (0 comments)
yes, this is the same picture as the last one---just cropped. i couldn't decide if i liked it more with the big sky and clouds or without. so you get both.
viewoffdeck-PD.jpg (Viewed 51 times)  (0 comments)
you can see the edge of the ship's deck as it gets in the way of a great sunset.
waterfallcliffs-PD.jpg (Viewed 51 times)  (0 comments)
oh, look at that! can you believe i took another picture of another waterfall? you're just lucky i didn't even take pictures of half of them!
waterfallpeak-PD.jpg (Viewed 45 times)  (0 comments)
and another waterfall with a snowy peak above it.
waterfallpeak2-PD.jpg (Viewed 52 times)  (0 comments)
same waterfall, different angle as the ship cruised past it.
tenderedaticystraitpoint-PD.jpg (Viewed 48 times)  (0 comments)
Our third stop was Icy Strait Point, AK. There wasn't a big dock for the ship here. The boat was tendered and boats would go back and forth between ship and dock all day long. The boats would carry about 100 or so people on each trip.
emondock-PD.jpg (Viewed 50 times)  (0 comments)
Here's Emily on the dock at Icy Strait Point.

crazystump-PD.jpg (Viewed 56 times)  (0 comments)
there were some pretty crazy tree stumps out there! the roots seemed to start several feet above the ground.
